Divorce Lawyer's Office Empty Re: Divorce Lawyer's Office

Post  Guest Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:08 am

Jacob locked up, and they both walked into the law office. It had been pretty busy, with men and women in their business suites walking quickly holding files and cups of coffee. Some talking on their expensive phones. While a couple typed away on their computers.

Jacob and Evelyn both approached the receptionists desk, the friendly looking women looked up and smiled at them. "How can I help you?"

"Yes, we have an appointment with Mr. Morgan?" Jacob told her.

"Can I have your name?" The secretary asked.

"Jacob Salazar." Jake stated his name, and she typed it in quickly.

"Alright, if you sit a couple of moments I'll let Mr. Morgan know you've arrived." She said picking up the phone to dial the attorney, Jacob mouthed thanks and walked away for a moment before she motioned Evelyn and Jacob forward. "You can go on in." She lead them in opening the door to Mr. Morgan's office.

Divorce Lawyer's Office Empty Re: Divorce Lawyer's Office

Evelyn was feeling extremely uncomfortable out in the lounge. Many of the people weren't too busy to shoot her an odd look since this floor was only divorce lawyers and she and Jake looked clearly too young to have been out of school. She swallowed and followed Jake, gripping onto her bag tightly as they entered one of the rooms in the long hallway at the end of the lobby.

The woman left them after closing the door and Evelyn looked around, instinctively shifting closer to Jake as she took in the very formal setting. God, she hated lawyer's offices unless they happened to be ones she worked in.

Mr. Morgan turned out to be a fairly young lawyer, maybe early thirties, with friendly eyes. He looked a little amused when he glanced up, but at least his gaze wasn't condescending like some of the lawyers out front had been.

"Please sit down, guys," he said informally. "This is a fairly painless procedure if you're both going into it mutually."

Evelyn shot Jake a glance and sat down in one of the two seats in front of the cheap oak desk.

Jacob sat down next to Evelyn and looked up at the lawyer, "Really?" He could tell this dude seemed nice but it felt so weird being in a lawyers office. Although granted this wasn't his first time hanging out with another lawyer. But this time it didn't involve him going to juvie.

The lawyer flashed him a grin and began explaining the procedure - which was already fairly clear to Evelyn. He explained the regulations on divorces, etc, shit that she'd had to memorize for class.

Finally, he whipped out the papers and they both had to sign at the marked lines. Evelyn gave her copy a quick scan."

"You know, you can take them home and rethink them over if you like, make sure it's all okay, the contract and everything," the lawyer said. "There's no hurry, you know? Divorce is a big thing."

"No, it's really not," Evelyn said shortly. The lawyer gave her a funny look and she shrugged.

"Come on, it's just a few lines you sign and you're free from a bad judgment call," she went on brutally honestly, not looking at Jake. "Especially if it's mutual."

Divorce Lawyer's Office Empty Re: Divorce Lawyer's Office

Post  Guest Thu Feb 10, 2011 2:42 am

All of this was really just going over Jake's head. He knew that to Evelyn, growing up how she did that. She didn't believe in marriage, since her parents marriage had failed. So divorce to her sort of seemed normal.

Sure divorce was normal, Jacob had tons of friends whose parents were divorced. But in his family divorce was a huge deal. Hardly anyone ever did get divorced and if they did they were kind of looked down. Given the fact that his family was pretty religious. Jacob read over a bunch of legal stuff, he really didn't quite understand. But he knew the second he signed these papers him and Evelyn were no longer married.

It felt weird. It was like this was putting some official mark on the end of their relationship.

Jacob looked up at the lawyer, he didn't really know why he felt sort of anxious now. "So um... we both just sign and that's it?"

***

"I'll go, that way you know. That way they both kind of have someone there for them?" Ashlee suggested.

Antonio leaned over again and whispered to Seth. "Someone is moving all up in my bro's Kool Aid."

Evelyn read over her contract again, picking up Jake's discomfort. Before the lawyer could say anything, she said, "It's just a bunch of stuff explaining we're not following the typical split-assets-in-half sham. It's simply saying that this divorce has no strings attached in the future, clean cut break."

To ease his discomfort, she reached over and poked his arm, sending him a sidelong smile at contrast with her previous cold scorn of divorces. "So you won't be paying Nova-support."

"Wait, what?" the lawyer asked, sitting up, slight alarm in his face. "This might require revision then! You didn't mention there were any chi - "

Evelyn's eyes widened and she blushed bright red. "Um, no, Nova's a dog," she said hastily.

God help her if she'd had a little unwelcome present as a result of her stupid drunken mistake.

***

Seth sniggered, unable to control it. Ashton shot him a weird look and then looked over at the girls in the backseat. "Lola, you wanna go in with her or should I? You'll have to basically jump them when they come out and lead them over here."

Jake smiled faintly, he almost wished Nova was here. It probably would have made thing a lot less weird. This was just beyond weird for him still, but his stomach dropped at the mention of a kid.

He had no idea what he would have done if he found that he had gotten Evelyn pregnant. That would have been so devastating on top of everything else that had happened between them.

Jacob was relieved though they were fine, and just nodded. "Um yeah..." He said straightening, cracking his knuckles.

***

"Just lead them here that's it? I mean its not like Jake would oppose a drink. After his shitty weekend and a divorce on top of it." Lola said. She knew she really wouldn't have a problem luring Jacob with alcohol.

Ashlee shrugged, "Who knows maybe Ev will agree to a drink."

Seth tilted his head. "Something tells me Evelyn will be tricky to push into alcohol."

Ashton frowned. "Well, hmmm, wait, we need someone to go decorate my car. Lola, how about you take the idiots over here and do it because they'd just mess it up?"

***

"Well, all right, just sign on the marked lines." The lawyer flipped the pages to show them where to sign. Evelyn reached over and picked a pen off his desk and bit her lower lip hard, leaning over her copy and starting to sign with a slightly shaking hand.

Lola glanced over at the Dream Team. Both Seth and Antonio gave her a little wave, and she just rolled her eyes. "Your idea sounds a lot better. Come on idiots." Lola said pushing them out of the car, opening the trunk they took the decorations.

"Come on, let's go meet with Ev and Jake." Ashlee said getting out of his car. The both of them walking to the lawyers office, waiting in the lobby for Evelyn and Jacob to come out.

***

Jacob swallowed, and held the fancy pen in his hand. He fiddled with it for a moment, tapping it on the desk. Jake took a deep breath before bringing the black pen to the line, and signing his signature on the lines required.

His hand shook a bit as he did it. But he kept his face expressionless. As Jacob signed the last line, he set the pen down gently on the desk.

"That it?" He asked.

The lawyer inclined his head, hands up. "Pretty much. You're free to go, champ. I'll let you knwo when it goes through."

Evelyn frowned down at the pages in front of her as the lawyer picked them up. Nothing felt different. But then, she and Jake had kind of worked around the whole marriage thing - it had never really affected their behavior toward each other. She supposed the divorce was no different.

Evelyn stayed in her seat another moment, and then got up and flashed him a polite smile. "Thank you for your time."

She turned and stepped out of his office, walking quickly to the lobby.

***

Ashton was growing bored sitting there. He had taken a seat next to Ashlee's, crossing and uncrossing his ankles. He tapped his fingers on the arm of his chair, watching the lawyers walk by. "Damn, you'd think they'd have a few magazines here. Although I guess whoever sits here has enough to freak out over without needing entertainment," he commented to Ashlee.

"Yeah plus I would assume most of the people who come here have appointments or whatever. So they probably don't wait too long. Although I'm sure since they handle divorce they probably get some colorful people here." Ashlee commented, sometimes divorced couples weren't always so civil.

Jacob nodded, and said a quick thanks to the lawyer as they both walked back out into the lobby. He didn't feel any different coming out. He was hoping though that in the future this would be the last time he would end up in a divorce lawyers office.

"I mean of course, we're a very lovely divorced couple. But if you mean like a circus show. Nah we were actually pretty tame. We were here early in the morning, and I'm like not fully awake until about twelve." Ashlee snickered.

"Why do people marry?" Evelyn wondered absently. "I don't mean drunkenly. I mean, real marriages. WHy not just, I don't know, move into a house together in a committed relationship - although God knows verbal agreements never last any longer than many marriages."

***

"Neither is Seth," Ashton remarked. He stretched. "I feel bad for Lola. Tony and Seth have been driving me nuts all weekend with their stupid commentary. Now they'll start in on her even though I warned them not to."

***

At that moment, Seth was asking Lola, who was busy arranging streamers along the backseat of Ashton's car. "Sooooo, when's the wedding, Lassie? Can I be Best Man since Tigga will do ringbearer?" He shivered in the cold, stamping his feet.

"I don't know, it seems almost like why bother anymore. Like no one is worth it. But I guess its just all how you grow up. You grow up with two parents that love each other, and you'd want that for yourself one day. You grow up with divorced parents, and if it ended badly between them you're scared. Its just how it is." Jake stated. Although now after all of this had happened, he wasn't sure so much if he wanted to marry anymore either.

***

Ashlee raised an eyebrow at him. Then realized what he meant, she had been around a couple of times to pick up on how Seth and Antonio teased Ashton for having a crush on Lola and what not. "Oh, well she's a tough gal I'm sure she'll sock them if they say anything."

***

Lola's eyes widened, "Wedding? What wedding? I'm not getting married." She said wondering just what kind of drugs Seth was taking

"Oh come on Seth! He's my brother, I get to be the best man!" Antonio whined as he threw confetti everywhere.

"What?!" Lola exclaimed, nearly dropping the streamers. Is that why those two chuckle heads were always smirking at her, and winking and crap whenever she was around Ashton?!

Evelyn crossed her arms ovver her chest, frowning at her feet. "Honestly, though, all that whole love-conquers-all thing is kind of based on bullshit, isn't it? I mean, people fall out of what they think is love, every day, don't they?" she asked, biting her lip as she looked up at him. "So is it even all that Hollywood's made it out to be? But then if you apparently don't have enough of that in a marriage, it doesn't work out either, like with my 'rents. None of this shit makes sense."

She groaned. "You knwo what, forget it. Sorry for blurting all this out to you. I keep forgetting you're a teenage delinquent," she said, with an attempt at a smile.

***

"I hope she does," Ashton muttered. Then he straightened up. "So, uh, haveyou heard from Connor lately? I haven't spoken to him or seen him in a while."

***

"What what?" Seth asked Lola, confused, passing her a few heavily-scented roses.

Lola turned over and hit him with a rose, "Is that why you and Tony are always acting like such idiots because you guys think we're in love?!" She demanded to know.

Antonio flinched. "Well don't you like him?"

Lola bit her lip, well of course she liked Ashton. He was nice, funny, smart. He was the only guy she had hung out with in awhile that really wasn't scared off too easily by Jake and Seth's idiotic antics. How could she have been so oblivious to the Olsen Twins making fun of her and him though. "Well I mean, of course I like him..." Her voice trailed off, she felt a blush on her cheeks. But let her hair curtain around her as she took the flowers and decorated concealing her face so they wouldn't see.

So maybe she had a tiny crush on Ashton. There was nothing wrong with that!

***

"Its no problem, I don't mind." Jake said, although he wasn't really sure what being a teenage delinquent had to do with marriage.

***

Ashlee shrugged, "Honestly since Vegas, and even before formal. I haven't really heard or talked to him since then. So I really have no idea what he's been up to."

Ashton quirked an eyebrow. Huh. "But..." He paused. "Even before? Didn't you guys go to formal as, I don't know, an actual date?"

***

Seth promptly did the most childish thing he could think of. He nudged Antonio and went, "Ooooooooooooh."

***

Evelyn threw Jake an amused smile and then leaned over and punched his arm. She stifled a laugh and walked on ahead into the lobby. "Thanks for attempting to comprehend all that," she called back to him.

"No, I mean. I felt bad. Honestly." Ashlee admitted flicking blue eyes up at him."See he kind of had a crush on me, but I really didn't feel the same way. And it was just he was being so nice at the time and I thought I'd be nice and go with him. I'll admit I had a crush on him earlier in the semester. But I found out he was kind of a jerk, so yeah that's what happened with that."

***

Antonio decided to chime in. "Lola and Ashton sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!!!"

Lola gasped, then grit her teeth. She turned around and promptly smacked Antonio across the cheek, and then reached over and yanked Seth's nose as hard as she could. "Shut up!"

Why did Ashton leave me alone with them!? FFS!

***

"Yeah honestly, I'm still trying to wrap my head around what my being a teenage delinquent has to do with marriage." Jake scratched his head.

"Owww!" Seth wailed, hopping around and holding a hand to his nose in agony. He cursed and frowned at Antonio. "Damn, Ashton will have fun reigning her feisty ass in."

***

Evelyn looked over at him. She stifled a giggle as she saw the confused look on Jake's face. Typical naive boy.

"That was just a comparison," she explained patiently. "About how I shouldn't be treating you like a personal shrink because you're just a teenage guy."

She paused and shuddered. "And no teenager, guy or girl. should have to go through what we just did back there." She flashed him a small smile.

***

"Huh," Ashton said, frowning at the floor and feeling kind of stupid. He hesitated. "Oh, well, sorry if I seem intrusive or anything. Only reason I wondered about Connor was because I was kind of planning to ask you to the formal but then Seth told me Connor told him he'd asked you," he admitted, looking over at the hallway and wishing Jake and Evelyn would appear already.

"Me-ow." Antonio nodded in agreement.

Lola glowered at them, and ignored them both returning to decorating. Really wishing the others would come and relieve her of her misery.

***

"Yeah well, you know. " Jake grinned, "We're not normal teenagers in case you haven't noticed. And if I had to pick someone to be married to for two weeks, glad it was you Red."

***

Ashlee blinked a couple of times, she was surprised he would admit something like that. "Honestly I was hoping you were gonna ask me to formal." She confessed. "I had a good time when we went out, and I thought we were getting along. I mean I see why you asked Lola and stuff cause you thought I was going with Connor and that I liked him, but that wasn't the case."

Seth sat down on the hood of the car and began humming the wedding march loudly enough to attract strangers' attention.

***

Evelyn looked ahead hastily, hating the flush that shot through her and warmed her cheeks. "Well, when you're not asserting your smug male chauvinism in everything and breaking into my room and waking me at midnight, you're not a terrible spouse either," she remarked lightly. Then caught herself. "Ex-spouse."

***

"Oh, ah well," Ashton said, shifting uncomfortably and scratching his ear. He looked away again. "Um, so anyways, any ideas on songs?" he asked, wanting a subject change. This was getting beyond awkward.

Evelyn's smile slipped off her face. She glanced up at him as they entered the lobby and stopped walking, turning to face him. What was she supposed to say, no, I won't get technical and keep referring to you as my freaking husband?
